TPBL Pickleball Class Guide

This guide helps players join the right class, keep games fair, and make every TPBL event more enjoyable for everyone.

BDL Rating means BackDoor League Rating. It helps place players in the right class, but the committee may also look at actual playing level, tournament results, open play level, and racquet-sport background.

Typical Player
Usually for players with around 3 months or less of pickleball experience.
Knows the basics and can finish full games, but still makes plenty of unforced errors.
Usually regular open play players and developing competitors.
Usually for players who are too strong for Inter Low but not yet clearly Advanced / Open.
This is the highest available level in TPBL / BackDoor competition.
Best For
For players who are just starting and are still learning scoring, serving, returning, positioning, and basic rallies.
For players who can already play full games but still need better consistency, placement, movement, and decision-making.
For players with better control, fewer unforced errors, better doubles movement, and a growing feel for strategy.

BDL Rating 2.0 – 2.4 and below New Player

Beginner

For players who are just starting and are still learning scoring, serving, returning, positioning, and basic rallies.

Who this class is for

Usually for players with around 3 months or less of pickleball experience.

Who can join
  • Players who have been playing pickleball for around 3 months or less.
  • Still learning the basic rules, scoring, serve, return, and court position.
  • Very limited open play or match experience.
  • Still working on rally control and consistency.
  • BDL Rating of 2.0 to 2.4 and below.
Who should not join
  • Players with a strong tennis, badminton, or table tennis / pingpong background.
  • Players with serious previous racquet-sport competition.
  • Players who already dominate new players easily.
  • Players with pickleball tournament experience.
  • Coaches or former coaches in any racquet sport.
TPBL note: Even if a player is new to pickleball, a strong tennis, badminton, or pingpong background may move that player up to Novice or Intermediate Low.

BDL Rating 2.5 – 2.9 Developing Player

Novice

For players who can already play full games but still need better consistency, placement, movement, and decision-making.

Who this class is for

Knows the basics and can finish full games, but still makes plenty of unforced errors.

Committee reviewYour actual playing level, past results, and racquet-sport background may move you up or down.
Who can join
  • Can serve, return, rally, and understand scoring.
  • Has some open play or friendly match experience.
  • Can play full games but still makes many unforced errors.
  • Still learning placement, dinks, drops, drives, and movement.
  • Limited or no serious tournament experience.
  • BDL Rating of 2.5 to 2.9.
Who should not join
  • Already dominates Novice-level games.
  • Consistently beats Novice players with ease.
  • Has won or placed high in Novice tournaments.
  • Strong racquet background with obvious control and movement advantage.
  • Pickleball coaches or racquet-sport coaches.
TPBL note: A player with a strong racquet-sport background may be moved to Intermediate Low or higher if the actual playing level is above Novice.

BDL Rating 3.0 – 3.4 Competitive Recreational

Intermediate Low

For players with better control, fewer unforced errors, better doubles movement, and a growing feel for strategy.

Who this class is for

Usually regular open play players and developing competitors.

Who can join
  • Can serve and return consistently.
  • Can rally with fewer unforced errors.
  • Understands basic doubles movement and court coverage.
  • Beginning to use dinks, drops, drives, blocks, and resets.
  • Has regular open play or tournament experience.
  • BDL Rating of 3.0 to 3.4.
Who should not join
  • Already dominates Intermediate Low games.
  • Clearly Intermediate High or Advanced level.
  • Coach-level ability.
  • Pickleball coaches.
  • Tennis, badminton, or table tennis coaches with clear advantage.
  • Players already proven in a higher category.
TPBL note: Intermediate Low is not for sandbagging. If a player is clearly too strong for this level, TPBL / BackDoor Events may move the player or team up.

BDL Rating 3.5 – 3.9 Strong Competitive

Intermediate High

For strong competitive players with solid control, better shot selection, strong court awareness, and more advanced strategy.

Who this class is for

Usually for players who are too strong for Inter Low but not yet clearly Advanced / Open.

Committee reviewYour actual playing level, past results, and racquet-sport background may move you up or down.
Who can join
  • Can play consistent and competitive matches.
  • Understands doubles strategy, spacing, partner movement, and transitions.
  • Uses dinks, drops, drives, resets, blocks, lobs, and speedups with purpose.
  • Has regular tournament or competitive open play experience.
  • Too strong for Intermediate Low but not clearly Advanced / Open.
  • BDL Rating of 3.5 to 3.9.
Who should not join
  • Clearly Advanced or Open level.
  • Regularly dominates Intermediate High games.
  • Coach-level player who should play highest available category.
  • Intentionally joining below true skill level.
TPBL note: Strong racquet-sport players, former athletes, and experienced competitors may be placed directly in Intermediate High or Advanced / Open if their level calls for it.

BDL Rating 4.0 and above Top-Level Competition

Advanced / Open

For the strongest players in the event, including top competitors, coach-level players, and proven tournament players.

Who this class is for

This is the highest available level in TPBL / BackDoor competition.

Who can join
  • BDL Rating of 4.0 and above.
  • High-level competitive pickleball players.
  • Players who dominate Intermediate High games.
  • Pickleball coaches or coach-level players.
  • Former or current competitive racquet-sport players with strong pickleball performance.
  • Players with strong tournament results or proven high-level match experience.
Who should not join
  • This is the highest category. Players who belong here should not register below their real level.
TPBL note: This class is for players who want the highest level of competition and are ready to compete against the strongest teams.

Anti-Sandbagging

Sandbagging is not allowed. Every player is expected to join the class that matches their real skill level.

If a player is clearly too strong for the class they entered, the committee may move the player or team up, reject the registration, or apply forfeits if needed.

Review Process

Class placement is based on BDL Rating, actual skill level, tournament experience, open play history, racquet-sport background, and committee review.

Players without a BDL Rating may be asked to attend BackDoor Open Play, especially rated sessions. The committee may also review open play attendance, tournament records, match history, or player references when checking placement.

Final Decision

All decisions are made to keep the event fair, competitive, and enjoyable for everyone.

TPBL / BackDoor Events’ decision on player classification is final.

Why proper classification matters

When players join the right class, games are fairer, divisions are more balanced, and the overall TPBL experience becomes better for everyone.
